The global market size of chlor-alkali is estimated to reach USD 104.50 Billion by 2021 and is projected to register a CAGR of 5.4% between 2017 and 2022. Chlor-alkali - constituting two main products which are basic building blocks in the chemicals processing industry viz. Caustic soda and Chlorine apart from soda ash. Most of the Chloralkali is produced using the state-of-the-art membrane cell technology which requires washed salt. The new process reduces electricity consumption in the product production. Further, it is cleaner process in comparison to mercury process.
Caustic soda is used in various applications such as finishing operations in textiles, manufacture of soaps and detergents, alumina, paper and pulp, control of pH (softening) of water, general cleansing and bleaching. The installed capacity of chlor-alkali in India increased from around 3.0 million tonnes in 2001-02 to 3.98 million tonnes in 2006-07 growing at a CAGR of 5.8% during the period.
