As of January 1, 2016, the demonstrated reserve base (DRB) was estimated to contain 477 billion short tons. In the United States, coal resources are larger than remaining natural gas and oil resources on total British thermal units (Btus) basis.
The actual proportion of coal resources that can be recovered from undisturbed deposits varies from less than 40 percent in some underground mines to more than 90 percent at some surface mines.
In 2015, U.S. coal production dropped 10.3 percent year-over-year to below 900 million short tons, the lowest annual production level since 1986. Coal production in the Western Region, representing 56.6 percent of total U.S. coal production in 2015, totalled 507.4 million short tons (MMst).
According to EIA, U.S. coal production averaged 192 million short tons (MMst) per quarter in the first half of 2017, a slight decrease from the second half of 2016 but still above levels reached in the first half of 2016. The recent decline in production was a result of weaker demand for steam coal, about half of which is mined in Wyoming and Montana. Production of metallurgical coal, which is used in steel manufacturing and makes up about 8% of total U.S. coal production, increased for the third consecutive quarter.
Steam or thermal or non-coking coal accounts for over 90% of the coal produced and consumed in the U.S. The electric power sector consumed about 92.5% of the total U.S. coal consumption in 2014. However, the demand for coal in the electricity sector has seen declined at a CAGR of 5.31 per cent during 2010-2015 period.
This decline in demand for coal in electricity sector has happened in spite of declining average delivered price of thermal coal from US$ 46.24 per short ton in 2011 to US$ 42.58 in 2015.
The average delivered sales price of coal for all users, including electricity sector, was $31.83 per short ton in 2015, which was lower by 8.6 per cent than the prior year.
After declining for several months, the share of U.S. electricity fueled by coal is expected to slowly begin growing when compared to the same period last year. In contrast, the share of generation from natural gas is expected to experience year-over-year declines.
The US coal market players has been grappling under performance pressure due to decline in steel production and the conversion of coal-fired power plants to natural gas and new environmental regulations.
