Scotch Whisky is produced in Scotland in its six regions, Lowlands, Speyside, Highlands, Campbeltown, Islay and Islands. Where Scotch it's produced makes a difference to how it tastes, looks and smells. There are two main types of Whiskey viz. Single malt and Grain. Single malt whisky is made in a batch process using a copper pot at a single distillery. Single malt is the premium, traditional style of whisky. When bottled as Single Malt it accounts for 8% by weight and 18% by value of Scotch whisky production.
Single grain whisky is made continuously via a modern column still, on industrial scale and the output is purer alcohol, but with less flavour and character than a Single malt.
According to Scottish Whiskey Association, single grain accounts for 60-85% of the volume of blended whisky, which accounts for 92% of Scotch sales by weight, and 82% by value.
By far the most important derivative product is blended Scotch whisky, a mixture of one or more single grain whiskies (for volume) and one or more single malts (for taste). This dominates the major brand sales figures.
Blended malt is a mixture of two or more single malts. It must not contain any single grain whisky and is numerically insignificant. Blended grain whisky is a mixture of single grain whiskies.
Single malts - with brands including Glenfiddich, Glenlivet, Jura and Macallan - typically sell for more than twice the price of a standard bottle of blended whisky. Scotch Whisky has enjoyed a record-breaking year for exports in 2017. According to official HM Revenue and Customs of UK (HMRC) data, last year Scotch grew in both volume and value (by 1.6% and 8.9% respectively) to a total of US$ 6.01 billion - the equivalent of 1.23 billion bottles exported globally. The figures come from the latest HMRC export data which showed that Scotch Whisky accounted for over 20% of all UK food and drink exports.
In terms of consumer behaviour trends the report notes that suppliers seek to promote new whisky consumption patterns in order to target particularly young people and women. Young adults look for no-complex whiskies more often used in cocktails while one in four consumers of whisky is now a woman in UK.
